Yep, I'll be out of work for the next two weeks. I'm debating on signing up for unemployment, or not. I have money saved up from my refund that was going to go towards a new mattress, so I might be able to deal with the money I have. Also the casinos are closed in my area now too.
I would sign up for unemployment if you can. I highly suspect things will be shut down longer than we think.

My concern is the long term societal changes if this becomes prolonged.

In today's world it's easier than ever to do everything from home. That this pandemic is forcing jobs to make it viable is only aiding the growing trend to decentralize everything... Not that this is a bad thing necessarily but well... If resources are the only thing that needs a public workplace, and people spend more time on the internet being isolationist. My concern is that becoming the norm.

As much as I'd like to hope this pandemic helps people see the value in social safety nets I already know the second it's over people will instantly go back to the bootstraps bullshit.

I think that there will be a lot of "pent up demand" once this is all over. Once the economy starts going strong and they get their raise and a new job, and whatever else, people will celebrate by buying commodities, necessities, and more. The economy will probably have a very strong recovery once all of this is over, but we will find out. It depends on how they handle the situation.

People are quick to change their tune when they experience hardships. Once they're back on their feet, though, it's back to "fuck the poor; they're lazy and are rejecting all the wonderful minimum wage jobs that Saint Donald has given us."

Having recently come back from Asia, it's a lot worse than people 'in the west' think.

MeowsePad is right, it's going to continue for a while.

If everyone was prepared then we could get out of this pretty quickly but the biggest problem is that hospitals will be full and the deaths rates of other things will start to raise. So as they need to control it our way of life will be changed for a good while yet.

Oh anyone who thinks China's being honest in their reporting of the coronavirus deserves to be shown how they can buy the Brooklyn bridge while they're at it

The only people that really do are nobody, except the news corporations pretending to believe it, mainly so they keep on good terms with China's government. That's the problem with the world's US/China duopoly/dependency, you can't go against them or show any issue with them as a major company or you're likely to be affected hugely. And with China, that means being shut off from a lot of cheap manual labour and industrial/production shito.

People that were genuinely annoyed with the UAC prompts in Vista clearly never thought twice about doing 'sudo rm -rf / --no-preserve-root'.
