Which do you prefer in strategy games (and RPG battles etc.), square or hexagon grid?

I prefer the square grid honestly. I know hexagons have their perks, but.... A square grid is easier on my eyes and makes it easier to contemplate things for me.

Me too, I really dislike hexagon. Though in some cases I'll rather have flat hexagon than isometric square.

I don't usually notice as dumb as that sounds.

I think I'm with sloo on this one. I have never really paid much attention. O_O

I like squares myself, it makes predicting moves a little easier and there's already so many other things im trying to keep track of along with role playing as well. Im sure hex has some awesome points but it just seems like one less variable to keep track of for me. Having said that I'll play on whatever grid the DM lays out. As long as we're using a grid in happy!

Currently playing dnd with someone that doesn't think getting a grid matters, they won't even draw the scenes/areas on paper.. so frustrating

either or, depending on the game.

however I prefer RTS games without grids.

I grew up playing grid based ones though.
and hex based ones are more common now.
but I've grown to like one's that don't tie down movements to grids, it gives a lot more freedom when deciding movements, especially when units consist of units that can move in 3 dimensions (air units, space units, submarines, etc.)
a good example of this would be homeworld.

I have maybe a slight preference for hexes, because that's what I'm used to these days; however, it's no biggie to me. I'll still happily play a good strategy game that happens to use squares :P .
